Does It Matter What heals You?

Psychology Today published an article by Diana Raab Ph.D. called “How to Heal Yourself and Others“, talking about how some of us are born to heal and some of us can learn how to heal. The gist of her article is about how if we have an open mind and body to allow the healing, then the healing can happen through those that are called to heal. She also talks about how we can heal ourselves by using the same concepts of open mind and body and meditation and breathe work(posted July 11, 2019). Why am I mentioning this article? Simply because it’s science, and it’s not science, and it’s recognized by science and not recognized by science. Wow that’s confusing!

I may sound confused, however, in all of this, is the truth and dare of Metaphysics. If you choose to believe in the powers of our minds and the ultimate healing force of Universal Energy then you just might keep your mouth shut about it unless you’re in a group of like minded people. Why would we do this? Persecution is the simple answer. Woo Woo, Voodoo, witchy poo… you name it, I’ve been called it! Making a decision to “come out” as a Metaphysical practitioner took a great deal of “open mindedness” on my part. It simply didn’t matter to me if anyone believed in it or respected it as I was working with people that were healing and changing their lives, that was all that mattered.

So back to the original question of this post, does it matter what heals you? If you were in really miserable shape and wanting to feel better, wouldn’t you be glad for any relief? If you were shown a way to heal yourself would you try it? If you were desperate to help a loved one wouldn’t you try anything?

As a mother of three kids I can remember when they were little and needed some fixing up. Whether they were sick or injured, I knew I was the one that needed to help them. Unknowingly we are giving Reiki as we kiss a booboo to help it heal and amazingly it works, crying stops and kids move on. Tomorrow its a scab and a memory. Hold the ouchie arm and it begins to be soothed. Did it matter what healed them? Nope, we were just glad it worked. How about when you have an icky tummy and you have a choice to take a pink liquid full of nasty red dye and chemicals or drink a shot of baking soda water. If the Soda water works then do you care that it wasn’t the nasty pink stuff? Probably not!

The point, because there is one, is that if Reiki or metaphysical healing works then why would it matter what you did to heal? It doesn’t matter to the one being healed I can tell you that with certainty. While writing my dissertation on the placebo and nocebo effects I was struck by the term used in almost every article or study I read about it, “just” a placebo. Just? “just” a healing, “just” a miraculous spontaneous cure, “just” a freedom from pain or misery for the subject. Do you see the ridiculous nature of this description of a placebo effect?

Placebo means that no drug was actually given and yet the subject healed on their own, as well as if not better than those that took the medication. That means that the brain believed it was taking a cure, a treatment and therefore had a healing event. These kinds of healings have been referred to as miracles depending on the person describing them. Now, I don’t know about you, but that is not a “just” kind of event! That’s a wooohooo, I’m better and my mind did that moment! Now a nocebo works the same on the negative spectrum as we might even develop side effects from the drug we THINK we are taking! Crazy stuff but that is the power of our brains. Reiki, Metaphysics and all the woowoo stuff out there that is designed to heal, to share universal energy and engage the mind to allow the progression of health, all fall into this category of “just” a fluke.

Ask yourself this question, does it matter how you heal? Would you care if your mind healed you? Does it matter how you healed if you feel great? Please don’t discredit your miracles or your possibility of miracles, your mind has the power to heal you, maybe with some help but it’s able to do it! Learning how to use our minds to heal us is an old practice that goes back so far in time that we can’t even pin point when it all began. What we do know though is that a placebo or nocebo is scientifically proven to either heal or hurt us. This proves that our minds are in complete control of our responses to heal or not to heal, given a drug or not. As intriguing as that is, we could all benefit from discovering what our minds are capable of. If I could encourage anything in you today it would be to reach out when you’re ready to try it!
