March 20, 2023 is this years equinox. At exactly 4:25 pm Central time, the sun crossed north over the equator bringing with it a balance in daylight hours and darkness hours. From this point on change happens rapidly and the balanced light and dark become less balanced once again. We will have longer days, shorter nights and the beginning of spring time newness to watch for.
This balance is paramount to us in feeling a rejuvenation as we watch and wait for spring and then summer to rewarm us, revive us and stimulate our desire for creation. There are people that absolutely love the winter, the snow and cold don’t seem to bother them, they rather thrive in it. Even these people can’t control the feeling of refreshed newness that the equinox brings. The paradox lies in our very own equinox or shall we call it our balance.
We hear it all the time, we need to have a balanced life. Work/ play balance, occupation/ home life balance. As we worry about if we have figured out this balance or not, we have just to look at nature and how we also have our own equinox. We come into a balance for a while and consistently seem to be doing it right for a period of time. Then just as suddenly, we seem to be going into our December solstice where the days are shortest and the nights are longest.
Does that mean we failed at balancing our lives? Absolutely not! It means that just like the nature we live in, we too are always going through the equinoxes and solstices of our lives. Balance looks different to each one of us. Sometimes I feel balanced when I create something or work at something and then enjoy my free time in equal proportions. Other times I feel balanced when I have more free time than work time and then again I feel more balanced when I work harder than playing harder for a period of time.
What does your equinox feel like? Are you balanced regularly or do you struggle to find that feeling? Do you think your balanced but someone tells you that you aren’t? It’s the equinox right now, it’s here and we can expect spring then summer and so on and as nature progresses through these stages so will you. Are you fearing not being balanced because of an idea of what that balance is “supposed” to look like? I know people that never retire because they need the work, the reason, the drive, in order to feel balanced. Are they wrong? Are you wrong if your balance looks different than mine?
Let’s explore what our balance is, what we need to feel balanced. Love yourself, be gentle with yourself. As I like saying, stop “shoulding” on yourself! The only thing you “should” do is figure out what balance feels like for you.
