
One thing we all like is the feeling of being safe! Imagine going to a zoo and the animals were all just walking up to you, great if they are something cuddly and friendly but how about the fanged variety? We probably wouldn’t get many visitors to the zoo if that were the case. Some people enjoy that kind of thrill seeking but most of us would rather feel safe.
Think of all the things you do to feel safe. Wearing a seat belt, having fire alarms, using a helmet, hiring an electrician rather than wiring your house by yourself! All seem like a no brainer when it comes to preventative safety measures. Then there are the emotional safety measures we sometimes employ. Not getting too close to people, protecting our vulnerability, avoiding tough conversations, just to name a few.
Exploring why you do or don’t feel safe emotionally is a long and sometimes uncomfortable path. I suggest that we do it another way. We can visit about what you would rather feel and have or do. Plan outcomes rather than delve into why you are the way you are etc. Feeling safe is a good thing if you’re still getting to do the cool and fun stuff in your life, avoiding all of that because you feel unsafe can be changed, you CAN live differently!
