Take a minute to really think about what you believe. About anything, like even as silly as do you believe the earth is round? I hope so, however, in our not so distant history it wasn’t actually ok to believe such a foolish thing! Think about all of your beliefs as they come up in the next few days. Ask yourself, “why do I believe that?”. Chances are you believe a lot of things because it’s what you learned growing up, or from a role model or villain for that matter. Why am I suggesting you dig deep into the world of your beliefs? Simply, because, you can literally change your life by changing your beliefs.
If you are really comfortable and happy with your beliefs then by all means hang on to them, but if you’re feeling bad about anything you believe in, ask yourself why you believe that? Here is an example to put it into perspective. I used to think that everyone on the road at the same time I was obviously had very poor driving skills. Road rage would begin before I left my driveway. I was just expecting and believing that at least one if not all drivers on the road with me would be inept! This sounds like an exaggeration but it was very true. To this day I have to remind myself that this is not true. Just where did I get this belief from? I can’t really remember much about my moms driving other than she preferred not to and would rather take a ride. My Dad on the other hand was pretty good about throwing shade to drivers that were “stupid” I also heard many times that females were terrible drivers from all kinds of people to the point that I actually expected that to be the truth. Pretty sure that included me too but I was in denial over such thoughts. It was hard to enjoy a ride with me or for me to enjoy going for a ride etc. Then I became aware of my ability to change these beliefs.
I started small, I picked out the one thing that really bothered me and that was slow drivers in front of me. I decided to believe that rather than an idiot in that car, it was a scared new driver, an older person being careful or someone with another issue I had no idea about or business to know. After all, I was probably not being slowed down more than the actual speed limit anyway! Oops! I started feeling ok with the slow pokes and gave then grace. Then I moved onto the drivers that ride your butt and pass you going like a crazy demon. They were not actually idiots, but had an emergency of some sort. I would picture a hospital run or even a diarrhea attack! This all sounds so basic but I can tell you that it has changed how I am on the road and how I feel for that entire day. So much easier picturing someone squeezing their butt cheeks together as they hurtled towards the nearest bathroom rather than thinking they were idiot drivers being abusive to me on the road!
Once we realize that it’s our reaction to things you “believe” that gets us all in a mess, we can literally change our lives by changing those beliefs. Now think of something big that you believe. How is it effecting your life? Do you even know you believe it? Are you harboring some belief that makes you feel bad? A big one that a lot of people suffer with is that they don’t believe they are as good as the person that makes millions of dollars or that is famous, given that you are not that person that is! We can feel good knowing that it’s just a belief that can be changed when we’re ready to.
Religion, social status, societal norms, just to name a few, all have very strong beliefs ingrained in us. Until we die, or depending on what we believe, we really don’t KNOW the “truth”, we only have our beliefs. As you think of a belief that you harbor that brings you anything but peace, imagine turning that belief into something else, play with the outcomes in your mind. Ask yourself, is this true or just what I have been believing? Could it possibly be different? Wouldn’t you rather believe in what is full of love and grace? Wouldn’t you rather feel good every day? Wouldn’t you rather learn to believe something wonderful or peaceful? It doesn’t matter what belief you want to tackle first, just tackle one and start today!
