Ram Dass said, “You have been somebody long enough. You spent the first half of your life becoming somebody. Now you can become nobody, which is really somebody. For when you become nobody there is no tension, no pretense, no one trying to be anyone or anything. The natural state of the mind shines through- and the natural state of the mind is pure love.”
When we can really see that we are not what our ego projected we become all these years, we see that we are just another soul wondering around on this earth for a short time. This is when we can free ourselves to be nobody. I can never speak like or portray what Ram Dass says in any way even close to how he did it, very well by the way, but that’s my take on it anyway.
When we allow ourselves to just “be” and not be driven by what ego tells us we “are” or “ought to be” that is when we allow others the same grace! If we can turn off the machine that drives us into the life of being somebody then we will also be able to turn that machine off as we look at others for who they are, ought to be, etc. This is HUGE! not sure if you’re catching on to what this all means but it’s perfect!
Just today I was about to force a judgement on someone whom I felt wasn’t doing it “right” or in a way that respected all those involved. However, I had the pleasure of listening to a Ram Dass talk this morning and he inspired me to live as nobody…that means everyone else is also a nobody and suddenly nothing matters that used to only 5 minutes ago! Well, ok it matters but does it really need to affect me in the same negative way it was? I have no way of knowing what that person was thinking or feeling at the time of their perceived “disrespectful” behavior, nor do I have any right to require an explanation. Ram Dass also says “Don’t compare your path to anyone else’s. Your path is unique to you.” Today I took this to mean the disrespectful act was in no way on my path, I chose to not be affected as I could now SEE that this person was on a different path than I.
Be nobody today, then tomorrow and then the next day….. free yourself of the constraints of your ego. For really good reading, pick up Ram Dass’s book, Becoming Nobody or watch the documentary named the same, you won’t be disappointed!
