Joy! What is that? Have you ever thought I am so super happy right now I could burst? That sounds like joy! How about thinking I can’t remember the last time I laughed and really felt good? That’s the lack of joy. I hear examples of why we don’t find joy anymore and some of them have to do with subconsciously comparing joyful events as a child to the life you live now. There is no comparison and we tend to judge our current life as less joyful. Or never having really appreciated joy when it was brief and having no idea how to prolong or increase it.
So, what if joy was a teachable skill? What if we could put something into practice that would assist us in achieving “Joy”? Well there actually are ways to do this that could help us find and duplicate joy in our lives. Do a meditation where you sit thinking of something that would bring you joy, a smile from a child you love, a note of love from a special person. Think of an activity or sport that makes you excited and happy to be participating in. Imagine going somewhere you love, seeing the sights that give you comfort and bring a smile to your face.
Just by doing this simple practice you will be putting the joyful thoughts into your brain that you are craving. New neuropathways can be developed by these meditations until they become common place in your thoughts. If we take more time to not just witness the small joyful moments but linger in them, we will be more Intune to recognizing the small joys that all add up.
Just for a week, every day, try a ten minute meditation that brings you a joyful thought or two. If it feels really good then sit longer than ten minutes and then longer than a week. The more you do this, the more you can program your own mind to look for and find the joy!
